Answers Before You Book

Straightforward responses to the most common logistical questions travellers face when booking rooms across the continent.

1. Does "On-Site Parking" guarantee I will get a space?

Rarely. In European cities, a hotel may advertise on-site parking but only possess five spaces for a fifty-room hotel. These are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis or require advance reservation via email. Always request a parking spot in writing when booking.

2. Why am I being asked to pay cash upon checkout?

This is usually the municipal tourist tax (often called a City Tax or Kurtaxe). Local laws frequently require hoteliers to collect this tax directly from the guest in local currency. It cannot be legally absorbed into prepaid web rates.

3. Can I leave my car at the hotel before check-in time?

Usually, yes. If you arrive at noon but check-in is at 15:00, most hotels will allow you to park your car and store your luggage while you explore. However, small apartments and unstaffed B&Bs cannot accommodate early luggage drops.

4. What happens if traffic delays my arrival until midnight?

If you are booked into a large chain hotel, the desk is open 24/7. If you are staying at an independent guesthouse, the doors may lock at 22:00. You must telephone or message the property to arrange a late key handover, otherwise you risk being locked out.

5. Are air conditioning and elevators standard?

No. Historic properties in cooler regions (such as northern France or Germany) frequently lack air conditioning. Elevators are often missing in 3-star independent hotels located in historic buildings. If you have heavy luggage or mobility limits, always verify elevator access.

6. Do rural stays include breakfast?

Most traditional European stays (B&Bs, Gasthofs, Agriturismos) include breakfast in the rate, as rural areas lack external cafes open at dawn. However, self-catering holiday rentals never include breakfast.

7. Why does my rural rental charge an extra cleaning fee?

Holiday rental platforms unbundle costs. The nightly rate covers the property, but the fixed cost of dispatching a cleaner is added separately. This makes multi-night stays economical but renders single-night transit stays very expensive.

8. Should I book directly with the hotel or use a platform?

Using a platform is easier for managing a multi-stop itinerary in one place. However, booking directly with the property often yields better rooms, free parking inclusions, or more flexible cancellation policies, as the hotel saves on commission fees.
